Web Hosting Fine Print, 3 Things to Look Out For Before Buying
Web hosting companies are really a dime a dozen these days. It is because of this reason that a lot of them are constantly having to come out with better pricing, or features or hosting packages in order to increase their sales, and stay in the game. However; because some of the web hosting companies out there aren't always the most honest, they advertise new features but in the fine print put clauses that take away from these new features. When signing up for a hosting package, make absolutely sure that when you register and purchase your domain that you have actually purchased your domain in your name. Sometimes what companies will do is put the domain name under their name and then just rent the name out to you for an amount every year. The problem with this is that the domain is not yours and if you ever decide to sell your website you won't be able to, and if you ever try going to another hosting company it is very hard and sometimes impossible to get your domain name from the previous hosting company. Hosting companies will sometimes waive the setup fees in order to make certain hosting packages more appealing to the buyer, however; you do have to keep an eye out for the fine print, because I have seen it many times where they will advertise this free setup and then when you get to the billing part you will notice that you have been locked into a 2 or 3 year term. It is always a good idea to look at the billing statement preview just to make sure you're getting exactly what you're supposed to and what you're paying for. For the most part web hosting companies, especially those that host tens of thousands of customer are very honest and offer exactly what they say they are. However there are companies out there that will display unlimited bandwidth and or transfer limits and then in the fine print there will be a clause that limits that to a certain amount per day. So you will get unlimited bandwidth so long as you don't go over the daily limit. It is always good to remember that when purchasing a contract with any company whether it be with web hosting or not, to read the contract and all the fine print to make sure that you are getting exactly what has been advertised and that there is not restrictions, or escape clauses. |
